Airplane Quilt for Mike's Birthday, February 2003

This scrappy quilt has blocks made from velvet, cotton, flannel, and ultra suede, in a pattern called "The Airplane" (published in 1930). The backing is a heavy weight corded russet velvet, and it was originally quilted with invisible thread (a mistake I now understand). I made a number of mistakes that show how little I knew about quilt making -- not properly bound, crappy hanging sleeve, and a poor mix of fabrics, including some that pilled and faded, lead to a hard-to-manage project. This quilt has been updated over the years since various blocks have Mike's former and current airplane tail numbers quilted into the body of the plane: N9510A (182 Cessna Skylane), N180KT (Cirrus SR20), N184KT (Cirrus SR22), N310HD (Cessna 310), N5PX (King Air), N884AM (Eclipse 500 jet), N884TM (Cessna Mustang jet), N425WH (Cessna Citation CJ1), and N735CQ (182 Cessna Skylane).
